What is Dysport?
Dysport is an FDA-approved anti-aging injectable used to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles. Like its predecessor Botox, Dysport contains botulinum toxin, a neuromodulator that works to minimize the appearance of dynamic wrinkles by relaxing the facial muscles that cause them.
How does Dysport work?
In order to understand how Dysport works, it helps to know how the different types of wrinkles are formed. Wrinkles fall into two main categories: static and dynamic.
Static wrinkles are the result of sun damage and the natural aging process, both of which cause the breakdown of collagen and elastin. As we age, our bodies produce less hyaluronic acid, a carbohydrate found naturally in our body’s tissues. Hyaluronic acid helps keep our skin plump, soft, and smooth. As we age and produce less of it, our skin tissues lose their strength and become lax, resulting in fine lines and wrinkles. Smoking, sun damage, and poor nutrition can all play a role in the breakdown of youthful skin structures as well. The resulting static wrinkles can be minimized with injectable fillers containing hyaluronic acid.
Dynamic wrinkles, on the other hand, are caused by facial expressions. They develop with repeated muscle movements such as those caused by smiling, laughing, frowning, and squinting. In youth, those dynamic wrinkles are temporary, and only appear when the person makes the facial expression that causes them. But over time, dynamic wrinkles become static wrinkles. People with expressive faces are more likely to develop wrinkles around the eyes, on the forehead, and between the eyebrows than “poker faced” individuals.
Dysport works beneath the skin to reduce those muscle contractions. The primary active ingredient, botulinum toxin type A, is considered one of the strongest toxins, but at the very miniscule doses contained in Dysport, it works as a highly refined and purified muscle relaxant. When injected into the treatment area, it temporarily paralyzes the targeted muscles, diminishing the appearance of wrinkles and resulting in smoother, more youthful-looking skin.
If Dysport is used before the dynamic wrinkle becomes static, it can prevent the static wrinkle from forming at all. If the static wrinkle has already formed, Dysport can be used to prevent it from becoming deeper.
