Botox & Millennials | Increase Indicates the Stigma is Gone
/There was a time when Botox was basically a bad word. Back then, no one talked about “having work done,” except to whisper judgmentally when it was clear that someone had overdone it. These days, the hush-hush and stigma associated with cosmetic enhancement have gone the way of the dodo bird, thanks to the celebrities and social media influencers who admit to using Botox and fillers, liposuction, implants, and other medical procedures to rejuvenate and restore their youthful appearance. And what’s more, the demographics are changing, too. Cosmetic procedures are no longer the sole domain of the wealthy matron. A younger generation of patients is turning to Botox, in particular, to stave off the signs of aging.
According to the 2018 Plastic Surgery Report by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Botox use is at an all-time high, with over 7.4 million injections performed in 2018. That’s an 845% increase from 2000 and a 4% increase from 2017. The report also shows that Botox is becoming more popular with younger users, particularly Millenials who are currently between 23 and 38 years old. From 2017 to 2018, Botox use increased by 2% among those ages 20 to 29 and by 5% among those 30 to 39.
The dissipated stigma is not the only reason Botox is gaining popularity with Millenials. Here are a few more:
An Ounce of Prevention
Botox works by blocking signals from the nerves to the muscles, making it a great solution to dynamic wrinkles, which are caused by the facial muscles. Many younger Botox users use it as a way to prevent those wrinkles from forming in the first place.
The Selfie Era
Social media statistics show that 90.4% of Millennials use social media. This is compared to 77.5% of Gen X and 48.2% of Baby Boomers. Some sources say the average Millenial will take 25,000 selfies in a lifetime. This much time spent in front of cameras is likely a part of what has made Millennials conscious of the aging process earlier than their predecessors.
A Commitment to Self-Care
Millennials are known for their dedication to self-care. Currently, Instagram shows almost 23 million posts sporting the #selfcare hashtag, plus hundreds of thousands of others with #selfcaretips, #selfcareisnotselfish, and #selfcarematters. As a generation committed prioritizing their wellbeing, it makes sense that Millenials would opt for self-care measures that run the gamut from journal writing and meditation practice to fitness routines and beauty regimens. For many younger people who are concerned with preventing the signs of aging, Botox is an important part of their self-care commitment.
Natural-Looking Results
Millennials lean toward minimalism. Many of them graduated into the worst job market in 80 years, and as a whole, their generation has not only embraced a more minimal lifestyle, but they’ve also made it cool. Tiny houses and Van Life are big with Millennials. From square-footage to personal style to beauty, Millennials tend to opt for “less is more.” The same is often true for their preference in medical procedures. Rather than going under the knife for dramatic results, many Millennials turn to Botox for a more minimal approach to cosmetic enhancement.
