How to Know Which Chemical Peel Is Best for Your Skin Type
Nothing goes better with light, summery clothes than a fresh, glowing face. At Siti Med Spa in San Diego, when it comes to a great non-surgical treatment for rejuvenating the skin, many of our patients swear by chemical peels. But with several options available, it’s important to choose the peel that fits best with your skin type as well as the results you hope to achieve.
What does a chemical peel do?
A chemical peel reduces wrinkles, corrects sun damage, and generally improves your skin’s look and texture. Although the term “chemical peel” may inspire less-than-pleasant images, it’s basically exfoliation by way of a safe chemical solution that leaves your skin softer and smoother.
Differences in strength
We usually recommend that first-timers start with a light peel and gradually increase the strength to best fit your skin. The strength of the peel is determined by several factors: how much chemical penetrates the skin, what kind of solution is used, how many coats are required, and how long it takes for the peel to neutralize.
Superficial peels use mild solutions like alpha-hydroxy acids to smooth out rough, dry skin and improve the texture of sun-damaged areas. They can be used on all types of skin, but they may require a series of treatments.
Medium peels penetrate the skin deeper than superficial peels, and can effectively smooth out fine wrinkles, remove superficial blemishes, and correct pigment problems with a quick healing time. This level of strength is preferred for darker skin tones.
Deep peels penetrate several layers of skin for dramatic, long-lasting results. This level of strength smooths out coarse wrinkles, corrects blotches from aging and sun damage, removes pre-cancerous growths, and can even permanently remove freckles. However, permanent skin lightening is possible so it’s not recommended for darker skin tones. Deep peels are also limited to facial skin, and complete recovery can take several months.
Selecting the right peel
At Siti Med Spa, we have several peel options available:
The Jessner Peel is one of our most popular choices, with ingredients working together to break up dead skin cells and exfoliate the outer layers of skin for a refreshed appearance. This peel also helps remove acne and blackheads, reduce wrinkles, and lighten hyper-pigmentation.
The Retin-A Peel is great for a wide range of ages: older patients hoping to remove fine facial wrinkles or younger patients looking to combat sun damage-related aging. Used continuously, it works by slowing down oil production, increases circulation, and exfoliates top layers of old skin cells.
The TCA Peel uses non-toxic chemicals to dry and remove the top layer of skins cells to expose “new” smoother skin, and not just on your face. This peel works to soften fine lines, minimize age spots, and generally improve the tone and texture of your skin on your face, arms, chest, legs, or back.
The Pumpkin Peel might sound tasty, but this is no autumn treat. High in Vitamin A, an active antioxidant, this peel targets cell turnover, strengthening and rejuvenating your skin to combat the signs of aging and acne.
We also offer SkinMedica Peels, which range in strength and provide wonderful results for various skin concerns and conditions. Vitalize Peel® is best for mild to moderate imperfections from skin aging and sun exposure. Rejuvenize Peel™ is appropriate for those with moderate to severe fine lines and uneven skin tone and texture. It also works well for those with darker skin types, though we recommend they begin with the Vitalize Peel®. And for first-time chemical- peel patients or those who are looking for overall brighter and more radiant skin, we suggest Illuminize Peel®.
